US potato growers connect with South American snack manufacturers and importers

Presentations were also given on the USPB, the US potato industry, major US chipping potato varieties and Dr. Joe Sowokinos’ discussion of maintaining US potato quality in the field, in storage and after arrival at the final destination. Although snack manufacturers in these markets work with local producers, they are interested in importing US chipping potatoes to supplement their production needs when local supply is low. Manufacturers were especially interested in learning about the US chipping potato industry.
Importers and distributors would like to import fresh potatoes to distribute to the many small local chip manufacturers for production, which would then provide these small manufacturers an option to continue to produce potato chips after local supplies have been diminished. During the trip, US growers were able to meet with manufacturers and importers interested in importing US potatoes. As is the purpose of all USPB-sponsored trade missions, this trip helped build relationships between buyers and sellers and increase the understanding of US chipping potatoes and their technical requirements among snack manufacturers.
